A QUESTION OF SILENCE

Part of Essentials of Feminist Cinema.

This provocative feminist work explores themes of violence, justice, and rationality under patriarchy through a criminal psychiatrist (Cox Habbema) investigating three women—total strangers—who have spontaneously joined together and brutally murdered the male owner of a clothes shop in an seemingly unprovoked attack. Told in flashback and with an astonishing assurance and visual flair, the result is at once accessible and humorous while deeply unsettling: a cathartic laughter that echoes long after the film is over. 35mm print courtesy of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts
