Part of Music City Mondays.
This Mardi Gras Monday, dig into the sights, sounds, and flavors of New Orleans with A duo of hour-long features from the great documentarian Les Blank. ALWAYS FOR PLEASURE is up first, followed by HOT PEPPER.
ALWAYS FOR PLEASURE:
Blank’s raucous tribute to the sights, sounds and flavors of New Orleans is perhaps his most sustained representation of pure joy. Footage of second line parades, crawfish boils, and the rituals of Mardi Gras Indians are presented alongside infectious performances by the likes of NOLA legends Professor Longhair and The Wild Tchoupitoulas, featuring members of the Meters and the Nevilles.
This is an energetic portrait of the Grammy-winning Creole musician Clifton Chenier, a.k.a. the King of Zydeco, who combines the pulsating rhythms of Cajun dance music, African overtones, and bluesy R&B into an irresistible melange mixed up in the sweaty juke joints of South Louisiana. Blank beautifully captures Chenier’s music’s propulsive, foot-tapping joy.
