Hardworking college student Asako stumbles upon the boy of her dreams when she meets Baku, an ultra-cool free-spirit with boyband good looks. But when he disappears without warning, Asako mourns the unexpected loss of her perfect lover. Fast forward two years, and Asako’s working in Tokyo and settled into the single life—until she encounters Baku’s uncanny doppelganger, a young salaryman named Ryohei. Her substitute boyfriend proves to be everything Baku was not: dependable, predictable and reliable. As if answering Asako’s restlessness with her new beau, the universe tests her strength of character, drawing her, Ryohei and Baku into a bizarre love triangle.
An official selection of Cannes 2018, ASAKO I & II is the newest film from the acclaimed director of HAPPY HOUR, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi.
"Enchanting…. Playful and profound…. A truly original riff on the doppelgänger touchstone that is VERTIGO." —Dennis Lim, Film Comment “An exquisite showcase for nuanced performances and a filmmaker in complete control of idiosyncratic material…. Hamaguchi [is] one of the most innovative filmmakers in contemporary Asian cinema.” —Eric Kohn, IndieWire
