BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE

Part of Fifty Cents for Your Soul: Women and the Showbiz Boys' Club.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s brazen depiction of moviemaking examines the alternating currents of lethargy and mayhem on set. A film crew—played by (and not so loosely based on) Fassbinder’s own frequent collaborators—deals with an aloof star (Eddie Constantine), an abusive director (Lou Castel), and a financially troubled production (managed by Fassbinder himself, in character). Inspired by the hellish process of making WHITY earlier that year, this is a vicious look at behind-the-scenes dysfunction that decadently unfolds as Fassbinder’s suicidal cinematic meta-muse. It’s a compelling examination of a sordid cast, crew, and their sadistic director, all succumbing to the seductive chaos of the production process. Also starring Fassbinder regular Hanna Schygulla and New Wave filmmaker Margarethe von Trotta. With music from Leonard Cohen, Spooky Tooth and more.
