BREWMASTER artfully captures the craftsmanship, passion and innovation within the beer industry. The story follows a young ambitious New York lawyer who struggles to chase his American dream of becoming a brewmaster and a Milwaukee-based professional beer educator as he attempts to become a Master Cicerone, the certification program that recognizes individuals who master every technical and aesthetic aspect of beer. BREWMASTER includes interviews with some of the best-known personalities in the industry (i.e. Garrett Oliver, Jim Koch, Vaclav Berka, Ray Daniels, Charles Papazian and Randy Mosher) and creates a cinematic portrait of beer—those who love it, those who make it and those who are hustling to make their mark.
“...Filmmaker Douglas Tirola (DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD: THE STORY OF THE NATIONAL LAMPOON) does his best to put a human face on each of those anonymous labels in the liquor store...while Tirola hopes that BREWMASTER will introduce new people to the global community of beer fans, he also has a more practical goal in mind...hop[ing] his audience will walk away with a newfound respect for the skill that goes into creating and maintaining a successful craft brewery.” —Matthew Monagle, Austin Chronicle “If beer is a religion, then BREWMASTER is the high priest of hops.” —J.R. Kinnard, Seattle Times “Americans...take brewing craft beer very seriously…. There are more beer breweries in this country than there are colleges… It stands to reason, given this obsession, that a film would arise to document just how deeply rooted beer is to American culture.” —Elisabeth Sherman, Food & Wine
