“…40 is the most beautiful age for a woman,” recalls Varda. “You’re an attractive woman, you have kids, you’re beautiful, you’re clever, you know something about life. It’s the perfect age to make a portrait.”

Left Bank/French New Wave filmmaker Agnés Varda affectionately captures the disarming, humble essence of English-French icon Jane Birkin in a whimsical docudrama inspired by Birkin’s 40th birthday. Varda deconstructs the sexual objectification of Birkin, coaxing the modest artist and mother to emerge from the shadow of an unwitting legacy as Serge Gainsbourg’s intimate muse and collaborative partner in French pop, while addressing her apprehension of middle-ageism. JANE B. PAR AGNÈS V. explores the absurdity and unrealistic expectations of fame, playfully mixing self-reflexive vignettes with dramatizations of favored heroines from Birkin’s fertile imagination. The film succeeds as an engaging feminist portrait of a multifaceted artist acknowledging her contribution to film, fashion and provocative pop culture, without taking the iconography of ‘Jane B.’ seriously.
