Part of Doctober.
A doc that takes the camp value of its subject and matches it. MANSFIELD 66/67 hones in on the fascinating later years of “blonde bombshell” and “Hollywood Babylon” covergirl Jayne Mansfield’s short-lived career and life, when she scandalously befriended San Francisco’s Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey. Focusing on the Mansfield image and mystique, the film includes interviews from a wide cast of actors, directors and academics including John Waters, Mary Woronov, Mamie Van Doren, Tippi Hedren and Kenneth Anger. Replete with a dorky modern-day Greek chorus, animated sequences and dance numbers, MANSFIELD 66/67 addresses the mythic figure—caught between empowerment and exploitation—and comes out really quite irresistible.
“Part-documentary, part-performance art piece…A sugary concoction that may be too much for some viewers, too slight for others, but fits very neatly into the Mansfield legacy.” —Jennie Kermode, Eye For Film
