MONOS

Set on a remote mountain top in the Amazon Basin, MONOS is a breathtaking survivalist saga tracking a semi-feral group of teenage commandos assigned to keep watch over an American hostage. The teenage commandos perform military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night—an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force known only as The Organization. After an ambush drives the squadron into the jungle, both the mission and the intricate bonds between the group begin to disintegrate. Order descends into chaos, and within the Monos, the strong begin to prey on the weak in this vivid examination of the chaos and absurdity of war from the unique perspective of conscripted adolescents. With a rapturous score by Mica Levi (UNDER THE SKIN, JACKIE).

Shot on location in Colombia on the Chingaza páramo in Cundinamarca and on the jungle of the Samaná river canyon in Antioquia.

“This overpoweringly tense and deeply mad thriller from Colombian film-maker Alejandro Landes is the best thing I have seen at Berlin this year: something between APOCALYPSE NOW, LORD OF THE FLIES, and EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT.” —Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

“By stripping away the sociopolitical context, MONOS provides a window into power-hungry mayhem on the fringes of society that could happen anytime, anywhere — but depicts its hectic showdowns with a you-are-there intensity that could only take place in the present.” —Eric Kohn, IndieWire

“Part allegory for Columbia’s never-ending political unrest, part a darkly twisted, reality-pushing fairy tale, Alejandro Landes’ MONOS...is a monumentally cinematic experience of lush wilderness and raw emotions.” —Tomris Laffly, rogerebert.com
