The new film by acclaimed artist and director Matthew Barney, creator of the CREMASTER Cycle and Bjork collaboration DRAWING RESTRAINT 9, unfolds as a series of hunts in the wilderness of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains. The characters communicate a mythological narrative through dance, letting movement replace language as they pursue each other and their prey.
Please note: Barney’s films can only be seen in cinemas and museums.
“A continuation of Matthew Barney's unique, modern-day myth-making process, the hypnotic images in REDOUBT have to be experienced on the big screen.” —Dustin Chang, screenanarchy.com “Animals, alchemy, and the astronomical alignment of earthly bodies and heavenly stars…the movie’s purview ranges beyond mere geography, taking up hunters and the hunted and ways they become characters in constellations in the sky.” —Andy Battaglia, artnews.com “Retells Ovid’s story of Diana and Actaeon through dance, set against the backdrop of the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. Diana…goddess of the hunt and nature, is reimagined with modern camo garb and weaponry.” —Dan Schindel, Hyperallergic.com “Takes aim at the great American pastime of hunting in his most straightforward feature yet, contrasting art with artillery… an art-film riff on THE REVENANT, patiently paced, but hardly tedious” —Peter Debruge, Variety
