In a role that would catapult his image to airbrush T-shirts and tattoo parlors everywhere, Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, an exiled Cuban criminal who rises to the top of Florida's crime chain, appropriating his boss’s mistress (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the process. A remake of Howard Hawks’ 1932 film starring Paul Muni, de Palma’s SCARFACE transposes the story to the drug rackets of early 80s Miami and ups the ante with a thick coat of stylized violence. Screenwriter Oliver Stone’s eminently quotable dialogue so impressed de Palma that he dropped out of making FLASHDANCE in order to direct this film. Say hello to my little friend.
