Led by film critic Jason Shawhan
Dario Argento has been one of cinema’s preeminent architects of nightmares—starting with his directorial debut, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (L’UCCELLO DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO) in 1970. Adept at weaving skeins of dark vision from mystery novels, fairy tales, operatic tradition, campfire stories, “Dark Web” drama, and whispered-about legend, Argento has been acclaimed as “The Maestro of Horror” for almost 50 years. In his films’ depiction of terror, sexuality, identity and violence, his work encompasses the surreal and the hyperreal, bound by the logic of the dreamer and committed fully to the ancient Dionysian rites of bloodletting.
This seminar will offer a brief tour of some of Dario Argento’s greatest works, inviting a lively and diverse discussion of the visionary, problematic and jaw-dropping (in all senses of the word) excesses in one of cinematic history’s unique genre film voices.
