Strong Leads Spring 2021

Strong Leads: A Film Seminar for High School Girls is a free after-school program spotlighting films by and about women. It is designed for 10th, 11th and 12th grade girls of all identities. A presentation of the Belcourt’s education and engagement program, Strong Leads explores gender representation in cinema, in the Hollywood establishment, and in film discourse.

As we gear up for the 93rd Academy Awards and the Belcourt’s Red Carpet Evening, we present a seminar on the history of Hollywood’s biggest night. This seminar will spotlight some of the most noteworthy moments in Oscar history, from groundbreaking firsts to startling controversies. And we will particularly focus on those moments when the awards highlighted or hampered ongoing struggles against racism, sexism and homophobia — issues that still today remain pertinent and prevalent in the movie industry.
