About the films:

A CHINESE GHOST STORY
Dir. Siu-Tung Ching | Hong Kong | 1987 | 96 min. | NR | 4K DCP
In Cantonese with English subtitles

When a timid debt collector Ning (Leslie Cheung) finds himself stranded in a rural town, he takes shelter in a haunted temple, where he meets the beautiful Nip Siu-sin (Joey Wang). As their romance develops, Ning learns that she is a ghost and is bound to a sinister tree spirit — a hideous creature who possesses the ability to suck the life of her victims with a very long tongue. Seeking help from a Taoist priest, our hero sets out to free her soul. In his role as producer, Tsui Hark tapped director Ching and key cast from their work on his own PEKING OPERA BLUES and A BETTER TOMORROW, evoking in spirit films as developed as Universal horror of the ‘30s — and in execution newer work in the vein of THE EVIL DEAD and HOUSE — spinning off a trilogy in the process, just as he’d done with A BETTER TOMORROW.

Principal Cast: Leslie Cheung, Joey Wang, Wu Ma, Wai Lam, Siu-Ming Lau

A CHINESE GHOST STORY II
Dir. Siu-Tung Ching | Hong Kong | 1990 | 103 min. | NR | 4K DCP
In Cantonese with English subtitles

In the second installment of Tsui Hark and Tony Ching’s phenomenal saga of the supernatural, four young people are caught in a tug-o-war of evil between an Imperial Wizard and a corrupt General. Meanwhile, a wandering scholar (Leslie Cheung), still mourning the loss of his ghostly love, escapes wrongful imprisonment and falls for a rebellious woman (Joey Wang). An evil monster threatens to destroy all hopes of love unless a maniacal Taoist ghostbuster (Jacky Cheung) can stop it first! When it comes to outrageous special effects galore, the second film gives the first a run for its money.

Principal Cast: Leslie Cheung, Joey Wang, Michelle Reis, Jacky Cheung, Wu Ma

A CHINESE GHOST STORY III
Dir. Siu-Tung Ching | Hong Kong | 1991 | 109 min. | NR | 4K DCP
In Cantonese with English subtitles

At once a distant sequel and soft remake of the first film, this third installment in the trilogy sees the evil Tree Spirit back with yet another romantic ghost played by Joey Wong. A Buddhist Abbot and his disciple (Tony Leung) seek shelter in the Orchid Temple as the amorous ghost attempts to court him. Jacky Cheung also pops up again, this time as a money-grabbing swordsman with a neat bag of tricks. Following the tradition of the first two films, its equal doses of comedy, action, romance and horror are infused with atmospheric cinematography to send the trilogy off in style.

Principal Cast: Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Joey Wang, Jacky Cheung, Nina Li Chi, Shun Lau
