Part of Music City Mondays
A bored New Jersey suburban housewife’s fascination with a kooky character she’s read about in New York’s personal columns leads to her being mistaken for the woman herself. Rosanna Arquette stars alongside Madonna, in her first major screen role. Both a box office and critical hit, the film took its fashion cues from Madonna’s own early style and has since retained status as an ‘80s classic — and in 2023, was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. That restoration work can be seen here for the first time via this new 40th anniversary DCP.
“Madonna, a cast-iron delight as the free- spirited Susan…acts with perfect hauteur…. Her Susan is an underground Holly Golightly, dressed in nasty snazzy underwear and getting Cheeto fuzz on her fancy dress gloves.” —Rita Kempley, Washington Post (Mar 28, 1985) “One of the most underrated films of the '80s, this is as fresh, quirky and downright romantic as it was back when Madonna hadn't even become Mrs. Penn yet.” —William Thomas, Empire Magazine
