FREAKED

Part of Midnight Movies

Sat, Apr 29 at Midnight: Introduction from artist and Belcourt staffer Cody Lee Hardin | BUY TICKETS

Self-centered sitcom star Ricky Coogan (Alex Winter) gets a firsthand look at the effects of a toxic chemical produced by the company for which he serves as celebrity spokesperson — when he visits a South American amusement park and is mutated by the oddities-obsessed owner (Randy Quaid) in this mind melting high weirdness from writers/directors Alex Winter and Tom Stern. Initially developed as a showcase for band Butthole Surfers, this truly unhinged film features an excellent soundtrack of early ‘90s alternative bands, one of the greatest animated title sequences of all time, and incredible makeup effects by the inimitable Screaming Mad George. Brooke Shields co-stars alongside Mr. T as the bearded lady, Bobcat Goldthwait as a man with a sock puppet for a head, and an uncredited Keanu Reeves as Ortiz the Dog Boy. FREAKED is the kind of go-for-broke, grungy, anti-corporate, ceaselessly creative hail mary that could only arise from the ooze of the MTV generation. It’s no surprise it’s notoriously difficult to see with an audience — so come on down and take a deep dive into the insane world of these Hideous Mutant Freekz.

“Attempting to compare FREAKED to any other movie would prove an exercise in futility. This is a singular film — a wholly original movie that, despite its flaws, will win over the most jaded film fan simply because it is uniquely and wonderfully bizarre.” —Film Threat
