THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2

Part of Midnight Movies

In a perfect storm of ‘70s and ‘80s exploitation film sensibilities, director Tobe Hooper and producers Menaham Golan and Yoram Globus return to the nefarious activities of the Sawyer family, Texas’ most exacting meat farmers and BBQ entrepreneurs. Dennis Hopper stars as a man of the law, but as musical prophet Jim Steinman said, “in the land of the pig, the butcher is king.” And butchery abounds, as well as some great sick laughs and feminist undertones. Special appearance by Kinky Friedman.

“Rather than futilely trying to replicate its illustrious predecessor’s gritty, uncompromising terror, [TCM2] instead opts for campy humor. Still, it’s nonetheless surprising to discover that the 180-degree tonal switcharoo works… There’s just something irresistibly demented about a follow-up with the balls to feature a wacky pseudo-romance between Stretch and Leatherface.” —Lessons of Darkness
