BATMAN FOREVER

Part of Midnight Movies

Riddle me this, riddle me that, you’ll find adventure on the wings of a bat! Brace for excitement as Val Kilmer (Batman), Tommy Lee Jones (Two-Face), Jim Carrey (the Riddler), Nicole Kidman (Dr. Chase Meridian) and Chris O’Donnell (Robin) star in the third formidable film in Warner Bros.’ Batman series. Director Joel Schumacher’s Gotham is a neo-fantastical light-show with colorful costumes, flashy buildings, and overly-elaborate sets, and while Tim Burton co-produced this thrill-ride of a movie, initial reactions to the change in aesthetic were divisive. In the intervening years, BATMAN FOREVER has gained its own cult following, so in the wake of his passing, we celebrate Val Kilmer’s iconic take on the caped crusader with a film that pulls out all the stops and thunders along on Batmobile, Batwing, Batboat, Batsub and bold heroics. Hang on!

“It all feels inexplicably fresh and energetic, as if these characters and ideas were being presented for the very first time…. This movie should have been titled BATMAN FINALLY.” —Matt Zoller Seitz, Dallas Observer (Jun 22, 1995)

“Although the film’s frenetic rhythm is reminiscent of an INDIANA JONES picture, visually Schumacher directs it like a musical, turning each image into eye candy, weaving one lush set piece into the next, as if he were the Vincente Minnelli of blockbusters.” —Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly (Jun 23, 1995)
