THE DREAMERS

Part of Teenage Wasteland

In May 1968, the student riots in Paris only exaggerate the isolation felt by three youths: an American exchange student named Matthew (Michael Pitt) and French twins Théo (Louis Garrel) and Isabelle (Eva Green). Having bonded over their mutual love of cinema, Matthew is fascinated by the sense of intimacy shared by Isabelle and Theo, who were born conjoined. When the twins’ bohemian parents go away for a month, they ask Matthew to stay at their place — and the three lose themselves in fantasy.

“The film is extraordinarily beautiful. Bertolucci is one of the great painters of the screen. He has a voluptuous way here of bathing his characters in scenes from great movies, and referring to others.” —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times (Feb 13, 2004)

“A real humdinger, at once an intimate romance, a glimpse into a rather unconventional friendship and a beautifully focused celebration of cinema itself.” —Gregory Weinkauf, Dallas Observer (Mar 4, 2004)

“Disarmingly sweet and completely enchanting…. There is perhaps no living filmmaker who moves his camera with such exquisite, expressive grace. Movie love is not only the subject of THE DREAMERS, but also its method.” —A.O. Scott, NYT Critic’s Pick, New York Times (Feb 6, 2004)
