Part of Golden Princess Hong Kong Cinema Classics
Undercover cop (Chow Yun-fat) has seen his share of cases — and his ethics ground down as a result. And he’s about to resign from the police force when he’s asked to take on one more case. A gang of highly skilled jewelry thieves have been knocking over Hong Kong jewelers, and they don’t mind killing people along the way. Through the course of investigation, a friendship with one of the gang’s core members — a ruthless but loyal and likable master thief (Danny Lee) — sets the stage for divided loyalty and conflicted honor. Fans of John Woo’s THE KILLER (screening Oct 9, 14) will see Chow and Lee together two years before that iconic film with the cop and criminal roles reversed (both films screen back-to-back on Thu, Oct 9) — and fans of RESERVOIR DOGS (screening Oct 13) and POINT BREAK will no doubt recognize a few of the dynamics at play here. With any luck, we’ll be seeing Ringo Lam’s subsequent films PRISON ON FIRE and SCHOOL ON FIRE as the Golden Princess library continues to be made available stateside.
