DESK SET

Part of Holiday Classics

Proficient manager Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn) runs the reference library of the Federal Broadcasting Network in Manhattan. But unbeknownst to Bunny and her team, the network is negotiating a merger. The network head hires genius efficiency expert and “electronic brain” inventor Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) to assess operations to modernize and ease the resulting transition and increased workload. As the efficiency expert familiarizes himself with the department, he falls for brilliant Bunny who’s every bit his intellectual equal. When Richard installs an enormous computer in Bunny’s department, panic ensues — as everyone is convinced the “electronic brain” will replace their jobs…just in time for the holidays. And Bunny is sure the computer — not her — will always be Richard’s priority.

DESK SET was the eighth film that Katharine Hepburn starred in with Spencer Tracy — and their first one in color and CinemaScope.

“A winning comedy that’s as leisurely as the Eisenhower years, with just a hint of the rebellion that’s coming down the pike….” —James Plath, Movie Metropolis
