Part of Midnight Movies
No one is safe in the colorful and once-peaceful underwater town of Bikini Bottom when the royal crown of the sea’s all-powerful deity, King Neptune, is stolen by a bold and mysterious thief. When he’s framed for the heinous crime, the owner of the seabed’s most successful burger joint, Mr. Krabs, has no other choice but to entrust his boxy employee and incurable optimist, SpongeBob SquarePants, and best friend, Patrick Star, with clearing his name. But, where should the team of aquatic detectives start? SpongeBob and Patrick venture into the unknown and treacherous territory of the God-forsaken Shell City to bring the crown and peace back to Bikini Bottom once and for all — but will they manage to find it in time?
Accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack featuring The Flaming Lips, Prince Paul, Wilco, The Shins, Ween, Motörhead and Avril Lavigne, the early aughts’ favorite underwater-dwelling quadrilateral trouser-sporting porifera returns to the big screen for the very first time all over again.
“We are so hung up on blue states and red states that our only hope may lie in the primary color that has been left off the map. We need something -- or someone -- yellow, and also absorbent and porous enough to soak up the ill will and scrub away the lingering bad feelings. Now more than ever, the country needs SpongeBob SquarePants.” —A.O. Scott, New York Times (Nov 19, 2004)
