Part of Midnight Movies
Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party, but their seemingly normal evening becomes a fight for survival when a gigantic, horrific monster of unknown origin begins decimating the city. Surrounded by panic and fear, the small group of friends embark on a desperate trek across town to on a rescue mission. Their daring journey is entirely documented on a hand-held digital video camera that provides a harrowing first-person perspective.
DON’T SIT TOO CLOSE TO THE SCREEN for this post-9/11 found footage kaiju gem from director Matt Reeves (THE BATMAN, DAWN OF/WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES) — which left audiences horrified and motion sick upon its initial release.
“Godzilla meets the Queasy-Cam in CLOVERFIELD, a movie that crosses the Monster Attacks Manhattan formula with BLAIR WITCH. No, Godzilla doesn’t appear in person, but the movie’s monster looks like a close relative on the evolutionary tree.” —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times (Jan 17, 2008) “As far as found-footage films go, CLOVERFIELD is about as good as it gets. (Suck on that, BLAIR WITCH!) Featuring the most terrifying on-screen monster since Hell’s Kitchen, Cloverfield kickstarts the series with a surprisingly well-paced and engaging story.” —Brandon Weigel, Medium
