In 1979, a decade after its cult-defining and fan-activating television show was canceled, Star Trek launched from daytime UHF syndication and dorm room appointments into the cinemascope world of big budget film. The tenacity and mercurial survival instincts that served the show well in building its fanbase allowed Gene Roddenberry’s “Wagon Train in Space” to reinvent itself in whole new arenas. The first four films in Star Trek’s big-screen incarnation are a fascinating journey from the small screen into something bigger, weirder, and wilder — following the human reach Out There, and back again.
In this seminar, we’ll follow the narrative path of human storytelling on its journey out from Earth and through the stars, with stops made in the world of 1960s television and late ’70s/early ’80s big budget big screen adventure, screening September 4th-7th as part of Star Trek 60th Anniversary. The human adventure weathers tumult, drama, and shifting cultural moments as we follow the crew of the Enterprise and its captivating legacy of creatures and social issues, never losing sight of the evolution of what it means to be human.
About the Speaker:
Jason Shawhan, GALECA/MCFCA/Rotten Tomatoes/SEFCA, is currently the senior film critic for the Nashville Scene. He was the founder of the Nashville Cinema Underground, co-programs the Belcourt’s annual Queer Qlassics and 12 Hours of Terror events, and co-hosts the Midnight Movie series at the Belcourt. A graduate of New York University (Literature/Critical Theory/Cinema Studies) and Watkins Film School (Cinematography), his art and photography have been exhibited at the St. Mark’s Position Gallery and the Barney Building in New York City, as well as the Rule of Thirds gallery and the Belcourt’s in-house gallery wall. He was the 2022 pimiento cheese supplier for Golden Girls Live in Los Angeles, and as DJ Nomi spins the Erase; Rewind mixshow weekly at dancemixusa.com.
