A BETTER TOMORROW III: LOVE AND DEATH IN SAIGON

Part of Golden Princess Hong Kong Cinema Classics

In this prequel to the first film, Cheung (Tony Leung) travels to Saigon on the brink of war with the U.S., intent on bringing his cousin Mark (Chow Yun-fat) and father back to Hong Kong. Cheung meets the beautiful gang leader Chow (Anita Mui) and must rely on her help for their safe return — but a love triangle between the cousins and the return of Chow’s former lover, arms smuggler Ho, further complicates matters. When Ho takes action against them, the cycle of revenge has begun. Following his split with John Woo after the second film, Tsui Hark took control of A BETTER TOMORROW III, co-writing and directing this considerable departure. Whereas many fans of the first two films decry Hark’s pull toward drama and romance, others consider it an underrated standalone and one of Hark’s greatest and most provocative films.

Principal Cast: Chow Yun-fat, Tony Ka Fai Leung, Anita Mui, Kien Shih, Saburô Tokitô
