Part of Action Distraction
Recipient of an Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects, INDEPENDENCE DAY is a spectacular science fiction feast for the eyes. A mysterious and hyper intelligent extraterrestrial fleet breaches the Earth’s atmosphere over the Fourth of July weekend. Their mission? Total inhalation. As havoc spreads like wildfire across the planet, a group of disparate civilians converge in the deserts of Nevada. U.S Marine Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and his team are called to spearhead the nation’s defense unit — but a disgraced and retired combat pilot, Russell Casse (Randy Quaid) sees this invasion as an opportunity to restore his valor. After many failed attempts to bring down the alien armies dispersed across the globe, Hiller, Casse and technical communications expert David Levison (Jeff Goldblum) must all work together with disjointed militias of refugees to prevent the entire planet being wiped out on the Fourth of July. Independence — after all — comes with a price.
“This is everything a blockbuster should be.” —Anne Billson, Daily Telegraph (UK) “A sci-fi story constellation of the brightest star elements. With German director Emmerich at the helm, INDEPENDENCE DAY soars as filmic uber-craft.” —Duane Byrge, Hollywood Reporter
