ROBOCOP

Part of Action Distraction

Omni Consumer Products has found a great way to combat crime in Old Detroit and make obscene amounts of money: using cybernetic implants to upgrade fallen police officers. But when Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is brutally murdered and resurrected as a robotic implement of justice, things get more complicated — with corporate intrigue, cocaine factory shootouts, nonconsensual meltings, and the ghost in the machine that may just be Officer Murphy. Director Verhoeven’s first American film is a visionary satirical blend of sci-fi, crime drama, theological allegory and splat-stick comedy — and won an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing. With Nancy Allen, Miguel Ferrer and Kurtwood Smith.

“The greatest science fiction film since METROPOLIS.” —Ken Russell

“In lesser hands, it might have been merely fast-paced and action-packed. But Verhoeven strives for bloodcurdling, darkly comic eloquence. He gives us heart with the hardware. Savagery with smarts.” —Rita Kempley, Washington Post
