ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS

Part of Music City Mondays

One of the most iconic performances in the history of modern music, David Bowie’s retirement of his Ziggy Stardust alter ego in front of 5,000 fans at London’s Hammersmith Odeon was captured on film by award-winning director D.A. Pennebaker on July 3, 1973. Although filmed 50 years ago, the film was not widely seen for over a decade. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of this event, the original, uncut version of the film has been restored in 4K and with a 5.1 theatrical mix — and will feature re-incorporated footage of performances with legendary guitar player Jeff Beck.

“The concert's the thing, and there we see this amazing phenomenon in full glory, prancing like some vaguely benign princeling at his hypnotised fellowers' behest.” —Derek Malcolm, The Guardian

“Bowie knew how to play his audience, and the documentary shows him as a fiercely concentrated performance artist on and offstage, who micromanaged everything from his makeup palette to the length of his kimono sleeves.” —Jami Bernard, New York Daily News

“The result miraculously resurrects a seminal moment in rock history, elevating Ziggy Stardust into the landmark cultural event it always should have been.” —Nathan Rabin, The A.V. Club
