POSSIBLE LOVE

POSSIBLE LOVE follows the intertwined relationship of two married couples facing different paths and hidden desires. Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) lives quietly with her laid-off husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and their young son Cheol until a funeral brings them into the orbit of Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker chronicling laid-off workers, and her husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung) — a couple whose affluent lifestyle stands in sharp contrast to their own. When Mi-ok agrees to be filmed, she grows close to Ye-ji, and finds herself uneasily drawn to the unreadable Sang-woo. As their worlds collide, fractures begin to appear in their daily existence. Marking his first release in eight years, highly acclaimed director Lee Chang-dong (BURNING, POETREY) brings his signature nuance to POSSIBLE LOVE, capturing shifting emotions, conflicts, and contrasting outlooks that shape these relationships.

“Unfolds with surprise and inevitability held in such perfect balance that each moment feels like it’s telling you something you’ve always known, but have just never thought of before…. This shimmering, sonorous work, from one of our greatest living directors, moves through the peculiar landscapes of human interaction with certainty, eccentricity and grace, alighting on a generous if rueful conclusion.” —Jessica Kiang, Variety

“POSSIBLE LOVE is as dense as our best literature, filled with rich character beats that feel of a piece with what came before and where these characters are going next. It leaves these people not with a period but an ellipsis…. You won’t forget it.” —Brian Tallerico, rogerebert.com

“Lee, already a master of absorbing dramas, has made what might be the most powerful, political, hypnotic film of his career…. The characters and the performances in POSSIBLE LOVE creep up on us, steadily and slowly, until we’re so invested in their lives that even minor events can take our breath away. It’s a long movie, but I don’t think I looked at my watch once.” —Bilge Ebiri, Vulture

“Another heart-stopping and novelistically layered stunner from modern cinema’s most literary auteur (a fiction author himself).... Every moment in POSSIBLE LOVE crackles like a wicked symphony of striated socioeconomic abrasion; every gesture, comment, and detail sharpens the strange geometry that brings these people closer together at the same time as it deepens the divides that will ultimately keep them apart.” —David Ehrlich, IndieWire
