Fans of Hong Kong action cinema and cinephiles the world over received some most-welcome news earlier this year. The Golden Princess library — 156 films in all — has laid fallow (and largely unavailable) for decades among the holdings of an entity who’s been largely uninterested in its management. Enter Shout! Studios, their partners GKIDS, and a team of restoration specialists. The deal brings together genre-defining works from legends John Woo and Tsui Hark, alongside star-studded vehicles featuring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung, and Leslie Cheung. These films dominated Hong Kong’s golden era of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and left an indelible mark on Hollywood — most recognizably in the work of Quentin Tarantino and the Matrix and John Wick franchises.

Featuring classics from the Golden Princess library by renowned filmmakers John Woo, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark and Tony Ching, this series will showcase some of the most vibrant and influential films ever made, all newly restored.

A BETTER TOMORROW

Regarded as one of the greatest Chinese-language films ever made, John Woo's 1985 film portrays three men on different sides of the law. Ho (Ti Lung) is involved in counterfeiting; Mark (Chow Yun-fat) is Ho’s loyal partner; and Ho's younger brother Kit (Leslie Cheung) is a policeman, unaware of Ho’s criminal activities. The trio of actors shine through this precision ballet of bullets, blood and destruction, and the groundwork is laid for the next decade of Hong Kong action cinema.
